The Number on Your Invoice Is Not Your Scale Weight
When we consolidate your goods at Freight2Me, we weigh and measure the merged carton at our Guangzhou warehouse with calibrated equipment, then calculate the chargeable weight the same way the airline will. This guide explains that calculation in plain terms, using a real snack shipment we processed, so you can see exactly how the number on your invoice is produced.
This is different from our volumetric weight guide, which is about how we physically repack to shrink volume. Here we focus on the billing rule itself.
Actual Weight vs Volumetric Weight: The Greater-of Rule
Every air shipment has two weights, and our calculator applies the same rule the carrier uses:
- Actual weight — what the scale shows, in kg.
- Volumetric weight — a proxy for the space the box occupies, from its dimensions.
The carrier bills the greater of the two. Volumetric weight is calculated as:
Volumetric weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ Divisor
For air consolidation we use a divisor of 5000, or 6000 on some lanes, exactly as shown in our shipping calculator. A box of 40 × 30 × 30 cm weighs 1 kg physically, but its volumetric weight is 40 × 30 × 30 ÷ 5000 = 7.2 kg. We bill 7.2 kg, not 1 kg, because that is the space it occupies on the aircraft.

Why Consolidation Changes the Math
Ship four suppliers’ boxes direct and each box is billed on its own greater-of calculation. Small, puffy cartons are exactly the ones that fail the volumetric test, so you pay the inflated number four times. When we consolidate, we merge them into one dense outbound carton. Removing the individual boxes’ empty air and packing them tight lowers the combined volumetric weight, often below what the four separate bills added up to.
A Real Example: A Snack Shipment We Consolidated
A buyer asked us to merge snacks from several Guangzhou suppliers. After we stripped the supplier cartons and rebuilt one tight carton, the scale read 13.09 kg actual. Its volumetric weight came to about 16 kg, so we billed the greater figure, 16 kg, at our China-to-UK air rate of $12.3/kg. Four separate courier boxes would each have hit their own volumetric weight and cost far more. The 13.09 kg on our warehouse scale is the real measured number, not an estimate.
Air vs Sea: The Divisor Is Not the Same
Air uses 5000 or 6000. Sea freight we arrange is priced per cubic metre (CBM), not per chargeable kg, because the consolidated crate simply occupies space on the vessel. That is one reason the air vs sea decision depends on whether your goods are dense or fluffy.
