A \u20ac15 pair of Bluetooth earbuds\u2014if accompanied by incorrect paperwork\u2014can hold up an entire consolidated container at Rotterdam. The issue is not the value of the goods; rather, electronics carry the heaviest compliance burden of any major consumer import. They are subject to CE marking, the RED (Radio Equipment Directive), WEEE registration, battery regulations, and, starting in 2026, the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take a batch of Bluetooth earbuds we shipped in May. They were stopped at Rotterdam because the CE mark on the packaging did not match any registered Notified Body in the EU\u2019s NANDO database. “CE” is not a single certificate you can buy and stick on a box. For most electronics entering the Netherlands you need a real Declaration of Conformity tied to the exact model. Wireless devices such as earbuds, smartwatches and remote controls must comply with the Radio Equipment Directive (RED)<\/a>, usually with a Notified Body involved. Chargers and power banks fall under the Low Voltage Directive and EMC rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheap listings often display a self-declared or outright fake CE mark. Dutch customs and marketplace compliance teams have seen enough of these to routinely flag suspicious shipments. The batch gets held, the forwarder asks for a valid DoC, and if the factory cannot produce one, the goods are destroyed or sent back \u2013 all at your expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Batteries, WEEE and dangerous goods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lithium batteries are dangerous goods for air freight. They need UN38.3 test reports and must be packed and labelled correctly. That is why power banks and e-bike batteries cost noticeably more to ship than a phone case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WEEE is the EU’s e-waste<\/a> producer-responsibility scheme. If you are a private buyer using the product yourself, you usually rely on the seller’s or platform’s WEEE registration. If you are reselling, you must register yourself in the Netherlands. Do not mix those two situations up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Declaration accuracy under the 2026 duty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new flat \u20ac3-per-item duty applies per HS code. Declaring a box as “electronics accessories” is asking for a customs hold. The correct approach is to list each item with its HS code: earphones 8518, chargers 8504, cables 8544, smartwatches 8517. Accurate codes also speed up clearance because customs does not need to reclassify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
