However, there are strict import requirements regarding the handling of transportation. The factory insisted it was the same product. Customs insisted the paperwork must match exactly. What the Cheapest Quote Doesn’t Tell You: The Compliance Checklist
For solar panels, the mandatory standard is IEC/EN 61215; for inverters, EN 62109; and for home batteries, UN38.3 (for transport) plus the full EU Battery Regulation documentation for resale. Every unit must carry a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) that matches the exact model number stamped on the product. A single character discrepancy – even a suffix – gives Dutch customs or the end‑installer grounds to reject the entire batch.
Consider a recent case: a buyer saved €500 on a container of panels, but the DoC referenced a different cell specification than the actual shipment. Customs held the goods for three weeks, and storage fees added €800 to the final cost. The factory could correct the paperwork – but only if they responded in time. That uncertainty is the real risk when price becomes the only criterion.
Batteries are the hard part
Home batteries are large lithium packs. They ship as dangerous goods and require UN38.3 reports, MSDS and DG-compliant crating. Inside the EU, the Battery Regulation 2023/1542 also requires carbon-footprint declarations, due-diligence documentation and QR traceability for resellers. Private buyers importing one battery for personal use face fewer registration requirements, but the transport rules are the same.
CBAM and future carbon rules
The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is phasing in. Direct solar panels are not the most heavily targeted category yet, but the direction is clear. Keep origin, conformity and factory documentation organised. Dutch installers are increasingly asking for it up front, and future customs checks may require it.

Inverter and battery matching for Dutch installations
Dutch installers will not connect a system unless the inverter and battery are certified for the Netherlands grid and compatible with each other. A cheap inverter with a CE mark but no VDE-AR-N 4105 or similar grid-code certification may be rejected. The same applies to batteries that lack the right BMS communication protocol for the inverter.
This is why buying panels, inverters and batteries from three different AliExpress sellers is risky. Even if each component is individually compliant, they may not work together. A matched kit from one manufacturer or a system designed by a Dutch installer removes that risk.
For resellers, keep datasheets, matching certificates and installation manuals in Dutch or English. Installers often ask for these before they quote the job. Having them ready speeds up sales and reduces support calls.
